SSP Burrs

The KOPI Deva is compatible with SSP burrs* and we offer 3 types of SSP burrs as an optional upgrade when purchasing your KOPI Deva. These are: 

  • SSP High Uniformity Red Speed

  • SSP Multipurpose Red Speed

  • SSP Multipurpose Silver Knight

During our testing, we found that the SSP recommended brew use should be followed when making your decision. SSP recommends High Uniformity Red Speed burrs for all brew methods while Multipurpose silver knight and red speed burrs for filter only. This recommendation is dictated due to the design of the burr geometry, the minimum vertical spacing needed to achieve the ideal brew method and the way that the teeth will cut the beans. 

When using SSP burrs, the battery life will decrease faster versus the Mazzer Super Jolly stock burrs. The longevity of battery life will depend on the grind setting and vertical burr spacing. In our testing, we found the battery to sustain to the following levels: 

  • 2kg @ 270 micron vertical burr spacing

  • 3.8kg @ 470 micron vertical burrs spacing

Our testing has found: 

High Uniformity Red Speed

When installed in the Deva, the SSP High Uniformity (Red Speed) burrs are suitable for all brew methods.

Grinding speed will increase (for espresso) compared to stock burrs:

  • increased from 0.3 gram/s to 0.35 gram/s @ 400 RPM

  • increased from 0.5 gram/s to 0.57 gram/s @ 800 RPM

Battery life will decrease from 3kg to 2kg per charge (primarily for finer grinding such as espresso)

Multipurpose (Red Speed or Silver Knight): 

The SSP Multipurpose burrs have the same burr geometry but have different coatings. The red speed burrs have a TiAICN (Titanium Aluminium carbon Nitride) coating versus the silver knight burr set which have a tin coating finish. 

Being designed by SSP as burrs for filter coffee, the Multipurpose (Red Speed or Silver Knight) burrs are suitable for brew methods that require coarser grind settings.  We do not recommend them for espresso. 

*SSP Lab Sweet Burrs are also compatible but we do not offer them at this stage.

SSP burrs and Particle Distribution 

We’ve used  Jonathan Gagné’s coffee grind size distribution software to analyse particle distribution for stock and SSP burrs installed in the KOPI Deva:

KOPI Deva stock burrs. Grind setting: 0.5 @ 400 RPM

 

SSP Multipurpose (Red Speed) burrs. Grind setting: 2.7 @ 400 RPM

 

SSP High Uniformity (Red Speed) burrs. Grind setting: 0.5 @ 400 RPM

 

SSP Multipurpose (Silver Knight) burrs. Grind setting: 2.7 @ 400 RPM

Please note: We acknowledge that taste can be subjective. Whilst each burr can be dialled in for a specific brew method, we have performed our own independent testing to test the different brew methods for each burr set. We found that the recommendation and purpose of each burr set, outlined by SSP follows what we experienced when testing the burrs for the different brew methods.
