Frequently Asked Questions

Is the KOPI Deva compatible with SSP burrs?

The short answer is yes. The motor and powertrain of the KOPI Deva are powerful enough to handle the extra torque requirements of SSP burrs. You can read our full testing results here.

Can the KOPI Deva be used with mains power instead of the battery?

While it is possible for the KOPI Deva to be used while plugged into mains power, it is not best practice. We recommend using the battery power where possible in order to maintain maximum performance of the battery over its lifetime.

How do I use the KOPI Deva?

What types of coffee can I make with the KOPI Deva?

The KOPI Deva features stepless grind adjustment, so you can dial in the perfect cup using any type of coffee with any brew method. Adjustments are very easy to make, with clear markings to help with consistency. Just loosen the locking screw at the head of the Deva, turn the upper burr carrier in the direction that you need (markings for FINE and COARSE are clearly indicated), and tighten the locking screw once you have chosen the appropriate grind setting. It’s now ready for the next cup!

Which grind setting should I use for my brew method?

If you brew a cup of coffee and notice that it is acidic (sour) and doesn't taste well-rounded, you have under extracted the coffee. As the goal is to extract more next time, you can grind the coffee at a finer setting to increase extraction.

If you brew a cup of coffee and notice muted flavors and a rough bitterness that scratches at the back of your throat, you have over extracted the coffee. The goal is now to extract less; a coarser grind setting will help you achieve that.

Your “optimal” grind setting will be different, depending on a number of variables. However, you can use the following settings on the KOPI Deva as a starting point:

1.0 - Espresso
3.0 - Moka Pot
4.0 - Hario V60
4.5 - Aeropress
5.0 - Drip/Siphen
6.0 - Kalita/Chemex
7.0 - French Press
8.0 - Cold Brew

*please note these recommendations are the spacing away from the burr touch, not the actual setting on the KOPI Deva. Each KOPI Deva is hand assembled, so there will be different burr touch numbers per unit.

How do I change the RPM of the burrs?

The KOPI Deva has a simple to use adjustment knob to so you can change the speed of the burrs between 200 and 1200 RPM. The RPM can be changed whilst the grinder is in use.

I mainly drink espresso. Can I grind directly into the portafilter?

Yes! You can purchase our Espresso Kit (Oak or Walnut) which comes with a tamping station / portafilter holder and dosing funnel. This is for a standard 58mm portafilter.

The KOPI Deva comes with a 58mm dosing cup as a standard. You can also choose to use the dosing cup holder and grind directly into the dosing cup. If your portafilter is a standard 58mm, you will be able to fit the dosing cup to the portafilter, and transfer grinds easily.

Is the battery replaceable?

Yes! We use a non proprietary Lithium Polymer battery (11.1V, 3s, 5000 mAh), which is user replaceable. We will also offer a battery replacement and recycling service.

According to the manufacturer specifications, the battery is rated for 500 charge cycles before degrading to 80% of its original capacity.

Why is a spray bottle included?

When you grind coffee, static electricity is generated. The effect of the static depends largely on the humidity within the coffee bean and the surrounding air. We provide the spray bottle so that you can use the Ross Droplet Technique (RDT) to minimise the effect of static on your coffee grounds. For 18 grams of coffee, we recommend 3 sprays with the supplied bottle (<0.2g of water) to neutralise the static, so you don’t end up with stray coffee grounds on your counter top. We have found this results in less retention within the grinder, and less clumps in the ground coffee.

How do you clean the KOPI Deva?

Since there are no coffee grounds retained in the grind path, there is no need to disassemble the Deva for cleaning. The outside of the burrs can be accessed, without any tools, by removing the dosing funnel. Use the supplied brush to sweep the inside of the funnel and the outside of the burrs as needed.
